San Fabián de Alico is a small rural village located at the foot of the Andean range, where most of inhabitants live off agriculture, forest livestock farming, and local tourism during summer. Contrary to the big cities such as Santiago where the real Chilean culture is disappearing, in San Fabián de Alico you will see livestock farmers called “huasos” that look elegant riding nice horses, wearing ponchos and big hats called chupalla. San Fabián de Alico is also famous because the poet Nicanor Parra was born there.

The village is located into the biosphere reserve called Corredor Biológico Nevados de Chillán-Laguna del Laja (UNESCO recognized area), and at the entrance of the gorgeous Ñuble valle, where many natural wonders (lakes, rivers, waterfalls, mountains, hot springs, primary forests…) are still preserved from mass tourism. It is mainly a famous place for fishing tourism because of its numerous lakes and rivers.

This area is very interesting in terms of vegetation because it is a transition area between the central Andes’ evergreen forests and the southern Andes’ deciduous forests. It is also a specific place in terms of fauna because it is the habitat of the south Andean deer (Hippocamelus bisulcus), also known as the Chilean Huemul, which is an endangered species of deer native to the mountains of Argentina and Chile.
